Here’s some universal names for hill or mountain country landmarks… it may help you remember them if you link the names up with features of your clenched fist…

Crags are the very steep rough part of a cliff or mountain. Ledges are the narrow surfaces that continues out from the side of a cliff, wall etc. A Lee is the side of a hill, wall, or other solid structure that provides shelter from the wind. Lip – the edge of a high piece of land. A Pass is a path or trail that goes through an area of mountains. Peaks are obvious – the summit or crest, the top bit of a mountain or hill. Ridge (or ridgeline) is the long narrow top of a mountain or group of mountains. Saddle – also called a fold, is an area of low land between hills. Screens are the small loose pieces of broken rock at the bottom of a cliff or along the slopes of a mountain. Shelf is a narrow piece of rock that sticks out from a mountain or hill. The treeline is the level of a mountain above which there are no trees.
